What is a domain name? - Close

A domain name is a name used to identify locations on the Internet (like a street address).

Much like your company name, your domain name will be associated with you like the logo on your business letterhead (effectively becoming your Internet "brand name").

TVCNet enables you to "own" your domain name by clicking the "Order Domain" link at the top of our web site.

Technically, a domain name corresponds to a numeric IP address. The Internet uses this number (IP address) to send and receive data relative to a unique domain name. This is where the "Nameserver" comes into play. Every domain name is likewise associated with a web hosting company, who manage "nameservers," which in turn redirect domain names to specific IP addresses (to a web site or server location).

Here's an analogy to more easily describe how domain names work. Let's say you own a baseball team. In this team you have a coach and players. Each player has a number on their jersey. The coach (the nameserver) manages players by name (domain name), who in turn each have their own jersey number (IP address).

As the owner of the team, when you register a domain name, you are effectively adding a player to your team's roster, who is then coached (managed by your web hosts nameservers), to play certain positions on the field (associated with the IP address assigned by your web host).

Once you register your domain name with TVCNet, it is owned by you, and we become your Internet coach, managing your domain name much like a baseball coach manages its players.

We manage and monitor the fans of your team (web site visitors) and ensure the traffic around your ball park flows freely in and out (high speed server connection) of the stadium (web server) so you don't have too.
